We just had the first large group tonight at AppState and it was awesome.  We had a great turnout…roughly 160 students came!!  We filled every seat in the room (actually had to pull out all the extra ones from the storage closet) and had several people standing in the back.  We had a ton of freshman come out and from the feed back we got really enjoyed the evening.  I gave a short talk explaining what InterVarsity is about and what it might look like to be involved with us throughout the year (service project, bible studies, retreat, etc.).  Here a couple photos from the night.

Today is my son’s first birthday. A year ago Tracy and I were living in Newport News and had just gone to the hospital because her contraction were close.  It’s crazy how fast a year goes by and how much happens in the midst of that year.  God truly is good to us and has provided for our every need.  May we disciple our son well and point him to Christ continually.

Leadership Retreat August 26, 2008

We just finished our Leadership retreat for this year’s leadership team.  It was a really great time of fellowship, reconnecting with each other, teaching, worship, and just having some fun with each other.

On Friday a bunch of the students volunteered to help move in the freshman.  The weather was nice and mild and there were so many people all over campus.  It was really sweet to get to meet some of the incoming freshman folks.  That night we started the leadership retreat.  Westminster Presbyterian Church in Boone allowed us to use their building for the retreat which was a huge blessing.  I gave a talk on John 3:22-30 focusing on verse 30.  We spent time talking about what a spiritual leader is and what that means for us as a leadership team in InterVarsity.  We also looked at a little bit of Paul’s life going through the “growing cross” diagram and walking through the below three passages.  As Paul saw his sin more and more he becomes more aware of his depravity and what he is saved from and the increasing need for the Savior in his life.  He must increase and I must decrease.

1 Corinthians 15:9 – least of the apostles
Ephesians 3:8 – least of the saints
1 Timothy 1:15 – chief of all sinners

The students loved there time at the retreat and it was a great time for me to connect with them as I didn’t even know all of them yet.  They also had an opportunity to brake into smaller groups for a time of prayer with each other which was really sweet for everyone.  It’s a really great leadership team this year and I’m excited to see how God is going to use them and me on the campus of ASU to reach His people!

So we just had our Vision Team retreat on Sunday.  It went well.  We went through John 13, looking at Jesus’ washing the disciple feet and discussed it as a group.  The main question we ended up focusing on was why did Jesus’ wash their feet.  It was a great time of discussion, examining scripture, and listening to what the Lord says about leadership.  The 4 statements below are what most of our discussions center around.

1.     That he might testify his love to his disciples (vs. 1)

2.     That he might give an instance of his own voluntary humility and condescension (vs. 3-5)

3.     That he might signify to them spiritual washing (vs. 6-11)

4.     That he might set them an example (vs. 12-17)

We also spent some time planning out a few things for New Student Outreach (first month or so of classes) and doing some general planning for the year.  It was really great to just catch up and hear how everyones summer went and touch base before the semester starts.

The weekend is over and I am back at home with my wife and son.  I was pretty tired when I got back to the house on Friday afternoon.  I fell asleep on the floor of my sons room after playing with him for a little while.  I woke up an hour and a half later.  I really enjoyed getting to know all the staff that are part of the area team and hearing there passions and how their respective chapters are doing.  Here is a picture of all the staff in the area.

So I’ve been at an area team meeting for InterVarsity since Tuesday afternoon.  I’ve just moved to a new area (Western Carolina) and with that a new team of staff workers.  We be meeting till Friday evening. As most of you know I’m the new staff worker at Appalachian State University and Lees-Mcrae.  The week is very refreshing.  We are spending each morning study John 11 and discussing it as a group.  The week is also a time for us to plan as a team for the coming semester mainly our area conference.  We also have some fun activity time where we will probably go canoeing, it a time we get to grow together as a team and get to know each other better.  We also do a lot of sharing about our specific chapters and what joys and struggles are happening.  All in all its a very beneficial time of rest, refreshing, planning, and growing.
