Happy Birthday August 27, 2008

Today is my son’s first birthday. A year ago Tracy and I were living in Newport News and had just gone to the hospital because her contraction were close. It’s crazy how fast a year goes by and how much happens in the midst of that year. God truly is good to us and has provided for our every need. May we disciple our son well and point him to Christ continually.
Leadership Retreat August 26, 2008

We just finished our Leadership retreat for this year’s leadership team. It was a really great time of fellowship, reconnecting with each other, teaching, worship, and just having some fun with each other.
On Friday a bunch of the students volunteered to help move in the freshman. The weather was nice and mild and there were so many people all over campus. It was really sweet to get to meet some of the incoming freshman folks. That night we started the leadership retreat. Westminster Presbyterian Church in Boone allowed us to use their building for the retreat which was a huge blessing. I gave a talk on John 3:22-30 focusing on verse 30. We spent time talking about what a spiritual leader is and what that means for us as a leadership team in InterVarsity. We also looked at a little bit of Paul’s life going through the “growing cross” diagram and walking through the below three passages. As Paul saw his sin more and more he becomes more aware of his depravity and what he is saved from and the increasing need for the Savior in his life. He must increase and I must decrease.
1 Corinthians 15:9 – least of the apostles
Ephesians 3:8 – least of the saints
1 Timothy 1:15 – chief of all sinners
The students loved there time at the retreat and it was a great time for me to connect with them as I didn’t even know all of them yet. They also had an opportunity to brake into smaller groups for a time of prayer with each other which was really sweet for everyone. It’s a really great leadership team this year and I’m excited to see how God is going to use them and me on the campus of ASU to reach His people!

V-Team Retreat August 20, 2008

So we just had our Vision Team retreat on Sunday. It went well. We went through John 13, looking at Jesus’ washing the disciple feet and discussed it as a group. The main question we ended up focusing on was why did Jesus’ wash their feet. It was a great time of discussion, examining scripture, and listening to what the Lord says about leadership. The 4 statements below are what most of our discussions center around.
1. That he might testify his love to his disciples (vs. 1)
2. That he might give an instance of his own voluntary humility and condescension (vs. 3-5)
3. That he might signify to them spiritual washing (vs. 6-11)
4. That he might set them an example (vs. 12-17)
We also spent some time planning out a few things for New Student Outreach (first month or so of classes) and doing some general planning for the year. It was really great to just catch up and hear how everyones summer went and touch base before the semester starts.

The weekend is over and I am back at home with my wife and son. I was pretty tired when I got back to the house on Friday afternoon. I fell asleep on the floor of my sons room after playing with him for a little while. I woke up an hour and a half later. I really enjoyed getting to know all the staff that are part of the area team and hearing there passions and how their respective chapters are doing. Here is a picture of all the staff in the area.

So I’ve been at an area team meeting for InterVarsity since Tuesday afternoon. I’ve just moved to a new area (Western Carolina) and with that a new team of staff workers. We be meeting till Friday evening. As most of you know I’m the new staff worker at Appalachian State University and Lees-Mcrae. The week is very refreshing. We are spending each morning study John 11 and discussing it as a group. The week is also a time for us to plan as a team for the coming semester mainly our area conference. We also have some fun activity time where we will probably go canoeing, it a time we get to grow together as a team and get to know each other better. We also do a lot of sharing about our specific chapters and what joys and struggles are happening. All in all its a very beneficial time of rest, refreshing, planning, and growing.
Tony Snow’s Testimony July 30, 2008

Here is a snippet of his testimony. Tony Snow died on July 12, 2008 from his battle with Cancer.
“Through such trials, God bids us to choose: Do we believe, or do we not? Will we be bold enough to love, daring enough to serve, humble enough to submit, and strong enough to acknowledge our limitations? Can we surrender our concern in things that don’t matter so that we might devote our remaining days to things that do?”

Sin July 22, 2008

We are sinners not because we sin but we sin because we are sinners
- the corrupt fruit flows out of the corrupt tree out of the corrupt nature.
- When we sin we are doing what comes naturally to us, to fallen creatures.
Christ and the Sabbath (part 5) July 20, 2008
Posted by Jeremy in Uncategorized.add a comment
This is the fourth post in a series. If you want to catch up check out previous post on past Sunday’s…if you haven’t read them, you should check it out before reading this one. These posts are in reference to the passage in Leviticus 23:3. I am taking them from an article written by Ken Puls over at Founders Ministries.
In light of Christ’s fulfillment of the Sabbath and the presence of this commandment here in this passage, is the Sabbath part of the Old Covenant that has “grown old and vanished away” (Hebrews 8:13)?
To this I would answer, “No.” This is part of God’s moral law that He established at creation and intended for all mankind—not just for Israel under the Old Covenant. The Sabbath is a gift of God made for man. Jesus said in Mark 2:27, “The Sabbath was made [or more literally “created”] for man and not man for the Sabbath. God intended it for our good and His glory. It is not just for Jews, not just for believers in Christ, but it is a command to which all people will be held accountable.
As a part of God’s moral law, it has its foundation at creation, not at Mount Sinai. God told His people on Mount Sinai to remember the Sabbath Day, not establish it. We see the Sabbath in Genesis 2 as God rested on the seventh day. In Exodus 16, where the children of Israel were told to gather manna in the wilderness, we see them working 6 days and observing the Sabbath before they arrived at Mount Sinai to receive the law.
We see the Sabbath displayed at creation and throughout human history because it is rooted in the character and nature of God revealed in His Word. God rested on the 7th day. He did not rest because He was tired. He did not rest because His energy was depleted and He needed to regain His strength. He did not rest because He became distracted or unclear and needed to refocus and get reorganized. God rested because it was His nature to do so. It was His nature to stop, reflect, enjoy and delight in the work of His hands—to manage time in a way that most perfectly revealed and celebrated His glory.
Notice that this is not just a theological principle of rest. It is a practice of rest as well. God took time to rest. The Almighty Creator of heaven and earth put rest in His schedule. He took time to delight in the act of creating for 6 days and on the seventh day he took time to cease and reflect. It was His nature to do so. And as His image-bearers, this moral practice of work and rest should be reflected in our lives as well.
• We need to rest, not just because we get tired and need refreshed (although for us—we need refreshment).
• We need to rest, not just because we get distracted and need to refocus (although for us—we need refocusing).
• We need to rest, not just because we are forgetful and need to remember (although for us—we need to be reminded).
• We need rest primarily because God made us to reflect His own glory and we need time to stop, reflect, enjoy and delight in the works of His hand.
And this is even more true for the Christian who has seen God’s work not only in creation and the deliverance of Israel from Egyptian bondage in the Old Testament, but also in the glorious work of redemption in Christ in the New Testament.
